While wildfires are suppressed by firefighters to protect our homes and communities, some fires are intentionally lit to protect and enhance wildlife homes, or habitat, of fire-adapted natural communities. Prescribed fire is something wildland firefighters use to manage and enhance wildlife and pollinator habitat on the Finger Lakes National Forest. There are many fire-adapted natural communities that need fire to be healthy resilient forests.
